THE AREA WE WILL BE LOCATED

The area is the province of Central Macedonia, in the North part of Greece.

In this region, all major ancient Macedonian sites are located. We will visit Pella the historical capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedon and birthplace of Alexander the Great, Vergina best known as ancient Aigai, the first capital of Macedon is where Alexander the Great was proclaimed king and Dion the most important Macedonian sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, leader of the gods who dwelt on Mount Olympus.

Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain, rising to an elevation of 2918m. The region of Mount Olympus is located 90km from the city of Thessaloniki and 400km from Athens, which are the locations of the two biggest airports of Greece. Mount Olympus is a circular complex with a perimeter of 80km, covering an area of approximately 500 km2. Mount Olympus was declared by UNESCO as Biosphere Reserve, whereas the EU has included Olympus National Park in its list of the most important bird habitat areas.

Litochoro, a picturesque town build at the shadow of mythical Mount Olympus is the base for the 2020 OLYMPUS CAMP. Litochoro known as “The Gateway of Olympus”, also enjoys the coolness of the Thermaic Gulf, it’s golden sandny beaches and blue waters.

INCLUDED ACTIVITIES.

Day time activities include visiting archaeological sites and museums, canyoning and hiking.

  • Dion comprises the largest archaeological park in Greece, renowned both for its monumental antiquities and imposing nature. The Archaeological Museum is located half a kilometer west of the archaeological park. The most important exhibits are the Mosaic of Dionysos and the Hydravlis.
  • Vergina. In 1976, the renowned archaeologist Professor Manolis Andronikos unveiled the Royal Necropolis of Aigai, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. There the archaeologists found intact by time, the Golden Larnax and the Golden Grave Crown of Philip II. Today the palace o Aigai is partially reconstructed while the site of the necropolis was converted to a museum.
  • Pella. The size of the complex indicates that, unlike the palace at Vergina, this was not only a royal residence or a grandiose monument but also a place of government which was required to accommodate a significant portion of the administrative apparatus of the kingdom. The most important exhibits are the Mosaic o Alexander the great hunting a deer and a warrior from the 6th century BC with a bronze helmet, a gold mouth plate, weapons and jewelry.
  • Canyoning Orlias gorge. The activity is in an impressive gorge and includes rappelling on the waterfalls, diving and sliding in natural river pools. The level of difficulty is medium and no previous canyoning experience required. English speaking professional guides will ensure safety, fun and provide all necessary equipment (neoprene suits 5mm, harness, helmet, all equipment rappelling). Note that you should bring with you a second pair of shoes that will get wet, a swimming suit, a towel and a water bottle.
  • A three (3) day trekking excursion on Mt. Olympus (2 nights on the Mouses Plateau Refuge). It’s an easy hiking path of medium difficulty. We will go up and down the mountain following different routes, so you can experience as much more possible. On the Mouses Plateau we will train Krav Maga (altitude 2.697m). English speaking professional guides will ensure safety during all hiking activity. Note that you should try to hike as light as possible. In case you forget or need some extra hiking equipment there are outdoor stores in Litochoro where you can purchase nearly everything. You should carry with you during the hike:
    • Medium backpack (35-40 liters) with padded straps and waist belt. Waterproof liner recommended.
    • Trekking shoes.
    • Water bottle.
    • Waterproof top with hood.
    • Fleece tops or similar, for cool evenings and windy daytime.
    • Shorts and long trousers for hiking.
    • Sweatshirts and T-shirts for hiking (one with long sleeves and collar for sun protection).
    • Hiking towel.
    • Sun hat.
    • Sunscreen emulsion (to protect against sunburn).
    • Flashlight (preferably head torch).
    • Your medications and personal first aid kit (plasters or blister kit etc).
    • Walking sticks (depending on your hiking experience)

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Optional trekking to the summit of MYTIKAS 2.918m (not included in camp price). The approach is a medium difficulty path and the last part is a vertical climb to the summit of Mytikas, which is a UIAA level 3 technical scrambling/climbing route. Ropes are being used for extra safety. On the way to the summit, there are several impressive drops next to the hiking path that should be considered from people with fear of heights. There is not any significant danger, since the path is relatively safe. English speaking professional guides will ensure safety during hiking and provide all necessary equipment. One guide will escort maximum up to four (4) people according to EU safety regulations. The view from Mytikas summit rewards all efforts and offers a panorama of nearly half of Greece !!! Booking for this activity should be done together with your camp reservation.
